Hathaway's second album Live! presented in a virtual nightclub was released a few months later. The album's lead single "Until Then" debuted at number 197 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart and at number 92 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. The follow-up single was the ballad "Baby Baby", which charted at number 75 on the R&B charts. The album performed poorly selling just 16,000 copies its first week of release. RIAA certified it as Gold, for shipments of 500,000 albums.

Clive Davis, who has worked with Hathaway, stated that his company Arista Records should give her a chance to record an album. Arista Records accepted his suggestion and in May 1996, Hathaway released her third studio album, Expect the Best. In the songs, the 26-year-old singer worked with some of the most notable producers of the time: Larry Carlton, Bruce Gaitsch, Jeff Lorber, Harold Middlebrooks, V. Howard, Dallas Austin, David Foster and the writers of "Someday We'll All Be Free'." The lead single of the album was "Expect the Best" written by Diana Ross and given to Hathaway. "Expect the Best" debuted at number 5 on the Hot 100 and number 1 on the R&B charts, making Hathaway the first and as of 2011 still the only female singer to top the R&B charts with a debut single since Diana Ross and the Supremes back in 1964. The follow-up single was the ballad "Someday We'll All Be Free'" Written by the Pacific Gold Songwriters. It charted at number 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and at number 2 on the Hot 100. "Someday We'll All Be Free'" has become Hathaway's signature song. The singles "Expect the Best" and "Someday We'll All Be Free" were named two of the seven most memorable songs of the 1990s by RIAA. d2c66b5586
