like all wolves, they have no ridge between their eyes, only a horizontal, low line. they are coated with a thick layer of hair over their shoulder blades, around their spine, and on the top of the tail.
the winter wolf is a large canine that is well adapted to living in large open landscapes and rocky areas. they are solitary hunters and usually travel in large packs of up to eight. their home ranges are typically quite large (up to 25 square miles), containing forests, prairies, meadows, and mountain valleys. they are highly adaptable and can thrive in a variety of habitat types that include disturbed areas, such as roads and power lines, agricultural fields, logging areas, rangeland, and sand dunes. they have a worldwide distribution and are not easily classified as an endangered species.
the winter wolf is a solitary animal that forms long-term matriarchal packs with females that are usually about 5 years old. because they are so large and powerful, they play a role in keeping the pack together. they lead the pack and are also a dominant animal in the pack and act as a guard and protector of the packs territory. they will spend a lot of time alone and make little noise. rarely have we captured a player viewing them on a night-vision lens while they were in the wilderness. as such, they are not commonly seen in most nature books and only briefly discussed in the chapters on wolf behavior.
the winter wolf hunts and preys on medium-sized and large prey such as the american beaver, moose, and elk. beavers are the most common diet item for winter wolves, ranging from 2-6 pounds. beavers also make up to one-third of the winter wolfs diet in some areas. elk is the next most common prey item (4-8 pounds), which is also the second most common prey item for black wolves. deer is by far the least common prey item. 3d9ccd7d82
