Joplin, a product of the Americana/outlaw rock revival of the 1960s, recorded for Mercury Records with his quartet, the Move. The Move's first international success was a cover version of the 1960 John Lee Hooker song "Boogie Chillen" which reached number six on the UK Singles Chart in 1971; it was also covered by Cream. This song also reached the top 40 in the U.S. and Canada. He eventually founded the band the Band, together with the Pretty Things' Paul Simonon, who recorded two albums with him. L'Étoile (Autumn 1975) saw the return of The Band, this time with the addition of keyboardist/guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's post-Dark Side of the Moon project lineup. The group scored the UK number-one single "Up the Hill Backwards" and their only number-one album, Saucerful of Secrets. The results of a huge reunion tour were captured on the live double album Saucerful of Secrets/Stage_1.999 (July 1976). The Last Waltz (1978) captures the Band in final form, with the unresolved tensions between Blackmore and the other musicians and between the early and latter-day incarnations of the band.
